So I almost obsessively keep an eye on my statement close dates so that I can squeeze every last percent of utilization down to zero, which also leads me to checking credit karma/nerdwallet obsessively to see when it posts as zero.
Do these dates change monthly? I have some that posted on 04/09 and haven't updated yet on 05/09.
I've seen some companies don't update if you have a zero balance, but some of these (mainly chase, the only card I carry any real balance with) I've considerably lowered my balance and still hasn't updated.
Closing dates are static on some cards, and they move around by a few days on others. As examples, Capital One cards close on the same day each month, while AMEX moves around. On cards with movable statement dates, the February or March statement is likely to be the one that's the most out of joint.
When a closing date is subject to change, the date is usually prominently noted in one's online account. Outside of that, you should be able to figure it out by looking at your statement. If you're not sure, call and ask.
If you've gone from a positive balance to a zero balance, your report should update. If you have consecutive months of zero balances and/or no activity on the card, some banks might not update.
We can help better if we understand the precise details using a particular card as an example.
It sounds like the card you are looking at typically has a statement close date of roughly the 9th of the month -- Feb 9, March 9, April 9, etc. Is that right?
First step is to pull your statements for the last six months and see whether there is an variation there. Is it always the 9th or is it sometimes the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th (for example)?
Next step is to explain in more detail exactly what you mean when you say:
I have some that posted on 04/09 and haven't updated yet on 05/09.
When you looked at Credit Karma on May 15, you did see the April 9 update? It's certainly not strange for an update to happen on May 9 and then a week later it still hasn't made its way into a CRA's database. It can sometimes take as many as 11 calendar days, though usually not nearly that long.
