Contact the bank and verify funds available in the account. Could be fake. If it is payrole expense it might have a stub attached to it. And probably a real signature, maybe 2 real signatures. But if your not an employee, hard to see how they could do this in error. Different dept.

Re: Cap 1 sent me a check for $1900 and can't tell me why!

As I stated before - and a couple of posters have reiterated - this very well could be a payroll error. Crap1 does not handle payroll in-house. It is handled by ADAT ( I think that's their name) - I can assure you that these mistakes DO happen.
I like the idea of shredding it and throwing it away. No temptation, no chance of getting ripped-off.

Photocopy the check, front and back, and the envelope if you still have it (make two copies), mail an old-fashioned letter to their Fraud Dept with one photocopy, telling them that you have just shredded the check and here's info if they wish to investigate. Stick the second copy in your personal files. And then hope it's over.

Re: Cap 1 sent me a check for $1900 and can't tell me why!

Mystery SOLVED! It was not a cash advance (I could tell by the check that it was not)

This is in fact an error on their part. Cap 1 kept trying to tell me it was an overpayment on a closed account from September. I advised that I would know if I overpaid something by $1900+ Anyway, after spending nearly an hour on the phone I got to someone who recognized that this check did not belong to me. So I told them I was shredding the check and expected a letter confirming the conversation. I wrote a letter to them as well and included a copy of the front and back of the check. I am not sure what the deal is with the other half of the transaction--there is probably some poor soul out there who is insisting that they paid this amount. Who knows...
I have worked so hard over the last few months cleaning up my reports I did not want any screw ups!

As a side note, I was astounded by the number of Cap 1 employees who told me--it is my check and that I should just deposit it. Certainly, anyone with half a brain would know if they made a 1900 error. I can only imagine what would happen if I had negotiated the check.

Thanks for all of the input!!!!
