So I stupidly responded to the Capital One letter that asks you to call about your new account (in my defense, I had just applied for a Capital One card and was waiting for a response letter, so it was just really bad timing).
Once I realised that it was a scam (later that same day), I added a fraud alert to all three credit reports. And then after I found this site (also the same day), I paid $10 each to freeze all three credit reports and I signed up for CreditCheckTotal to monitor activity.
My main concern is that the scammers may have applied for credit between the time I gave them my information and the time I added the alerts and then later froze the reports. All of this happened about a month ago, and I haven't seen any new inquiries on my credit reports from CCT.
So I just have two questions for all of you:
1. Because I froze my credit reports, does that mean the CCT reports are not accurate? That is, are they only going to be able to access the last report available before I froze it (they won't show any inquiries made based on applications for credit by the scammers). If so, do I need to unfreeze my credit for CCT? Can this be done without unfreezing it for other purposes?
2. Is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks in advance for any help, it's all been very stressful as you can imagine,.
2- I'd file a police report. If anything did appear, you can easily get it off your CR with that report.
