Closing for non-use

OK, not credit cards, but today I got a ATM/debit card on my bank account to replace one expiring soon.  However, there wasn't one for my wife who is a joint account holder.   When I asked, it appears that since she hadn't used her ATM card,  they don't automatically issue a new one and she will have to call.

Sort of understandable from their view but also not.  Unlike a CC, this is our money and we should be able to easily access through the advertized channels, whether or not there has been usage in the past.

Annoying i agree, but also understandable. No sense in the bank sending out a card if the person wont use it, saves them on making and mailing it out. Although, there are some who only use it in emergency situations which may only be once or twice a year so they should at least ask if the person needs one before simply deciding to not mail a card out

Re: Closing for non-use

Sames goes with my debit card but from a credit union and not a bank. I'm sure from reading your post that I use my debit card more often than your wife but since I'm not the primary on the account, I have to call and order a new card... the CU doesn't automatically send me one and my card has a different expiration than my spouse's. It seems this may be more common among other banks/CUs and not just yours.  I can see your frustration.

Agreed!

It's my money and I want it now!

We've never used our ATM cards but NFCU sent them to us as well as our debit cards which are also rarely used.

So what? I have used my Debit card once in the past year simply because A) I have reward cards so better off getting at least 1% then 0% on my purchases and B) It is simply safer to use Credit then Debit

If they did that to me I would probably end up just moving to Citi Bank .... Chase already is annoying because besides NY I can't find any ATM's wherever I go like Boston or Washington DC

Re: Closing for non-use

I don't think this is uncommon for a number of reasons, but most saliently, any card can be lost / fraudulently used.

I accidently picked up the USAA debit card which I haven't used once in more than 2 years that I've had the account there, swiped it, and whoopsie declined... unexpected as I was expecting the credit card, and didn't realize it until after I looked at the card more closely.  Silly me, didn't know why I keep any of my debit cards around anymore so preceded to cut them up after this tiny blunder.
