Coronavirus Killed my Score!

Hi all, long time lurer, first time poster here.

So my job makes me travel quite a lot, during January I had to travel to Europe and I catched something weird, or so I thought at the moment, a couple days later I was being isolated as a presumed Covid patient. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and then I was released to a quarantine hotel, as it all happened during a business trip and I had no home to go. After about a month in the hotel I was finally released by the doctors, virus free, thank God...
I'm still in Spain and since borders are closed, and total lockdown is in effect, it seems to me that this will take some time before I can get back home. Meanwhile, since released from quarantine I had been working and trying to keep up, and put myself up to date on everything, including my financial obligations. Since I was hospitalized I could not pay my credit cards (2 BofA, 2 US Bank, 2 AMEX, 1 Wells Fargo) but just now that I'm able to get a hand on everything I've found out that AMEX, BofA and Wells Fargo closed my accounts because tardiness, of course I was late on my payments and did not have means to advise them of my situation.

Actual situation is that I'm making payments to every card and put them all up to date, but the late payments will not be erased from my record as well as the accounts closed, not to mention that my score went from 780's to 450's. What should I do? I need those cards, is it possible to reopen them? what should my speech be to them in order to fix this situation?

Thanks to all for your comments...

I don't know how to advise you on what to do.

But this does highlight the need to set up minimum payment auto pay to cover situations just like this.

Good luck with however you proceed.

Have you been in touch with the lenders to explain the situation?  I assume your hardship is well-documented -  and lenders are practicing leniancy due to Covid --   I'd start by reaching out to the Executive Offices, in writing if possible (email should suffice) and providing whatever documentation you have to support your situation.

I'm sorry this has happened and the ongoing drama; but, on the upside,  very happy you are well, health wise.

Re: Coronavirus Killed my Score!

Go by the hospital and get your entire chart from medical records. Dont know how Spain works compared to the US. You are entitled to get copies of your entire chart.  Along with whoever or wherever you were help up at. Send it all in explaining you were a poss Covid19 and was cut off from leaving where you were at. But they could come back and say you could have called us or if you had a laptop with you. You could have paid us. Could go either way. Good Luck.

Bad on top of worse. Sorry to hear about your plight.

With a score of 780 evidently you were doing the right things for a good amount of time.  That history should count for something.  Many creditors are working with their customers who are suffering from the effects of this crippling and deadly virus.

If you have had a good record with these creditors you definitely should get in contact with them and explain your situation.  If you don't resolve it in a beneficial way with one consumer rep then don't hesitate and call back because a different rep might work with you better.

Ask them for GOODWILL actions to your accounts.

Good luck and let us know how you turn out.

Re: Coronavirus Killed my Score!

I'd also request documentation from your employer (on letterhead) to support your case along with the MRs as your creditors would have your employer on file. Stress Stress Stress your hotel quarantine in Europe and the stress of being overseas with the emotional stress of possibility being diagnosed, away from home.  I'd also note that when things returned to so called "normal" for you, you caught everything up, which is sooner than many of the extensions allowed for creditors due to the health crisis.  Plead, all pride aside.  Not sure if this is permitted on the forums and this is a little different as it's a judgement call, but when I've dealt with facts I've always cc:d my state representative.

Nothing compared to your experience but my car was totaled (while parked) by a commercial truck.  I filed the report, did everything I was supposed to do and didn't want to go through my Insurance.  I couldn't get the trucking company's insurance to return a call for 3 months.  I paid for my rental during this period.  I finally wrote a letter to the company, cc:d my state representative and insurance commissioner and stressed how I "could have died" as I was parked legally sitting in the car eating my lunch.  In less than a week I received a certified check for the loss and a few weeks later (not sure how they found out) I was refunded my rental car fee.  Just to say, the power of a true story and including some of the right people might make a difference with your creditors.  Key word "might".Smiley Indifferent

Wishing you well and much success.

Good advice so far (contact those creditors ASAP!)....just want to convey that I'm sorry this happened to you but so glad your feeling better.
I suspect we will be seeing more of these situations unfortunately.

Re: Coronavirus Killed my Score!

Hi all, thanks for all the advice and good vibes... Just to clarify: When I started to feel really sick and went to the hospital, I knew that one should not bring phones or laptops as hospitals have said that there is no way to store them. Once hospitalized, you are not allowed to go back anywhere, I had a friend go along with me and he did advise my family and employer of the situation, they were almost on the blind from then on, for almost 4 weeks before I got out the hospital and moved to a hotel quarantine where I was able to make phone calls and let them know I was still alive.

Quarantine lasted for almost 5 weeks, you are not released until you come out negative from 2 consecutive tests. It took me that long to get rid of the bug. Since there is no flights home, I'm still here and no hope to go back soon. All my stuff was away at my hotel (other one), where it was stored, luckily for me. As soon as I got released from everthing, I began to call my banks.

Anyway, I've called BofA and WF and explained the situation to them, both have agreed to consider reopening the accounts, of course I've had somebody at my office made payments of all my accounts and put them all in current status. Will call AMEX today and US Bank. Hopefully they'll reconsider and let me go on with my life. Will post updates when necessary.

Re: Coronavirus Killed my Score!

Once your cards are paid and brought to current, I would contact them and ask for a goodwill adjustment and have them re open the accounts. You have a good reason for the missed payments, although you should have signed up for auto pay.

American Express: Platinum Charge, Business Platinum, Business Gold, Delta Business Reserve, Business Cash, Business Plus
Bank of America: Alaska Air Atmos Summit Visa Infinite
Capital One: Savor WEMC, Venture X Visa Infinite
Chase: Freedom U Visa Signature, CSR Visa Infinite
Citibank: AAdvantage Globe WLMC
Elan/US Bank: Fidelity Visa Signature
Credit Union: Cash Back Visa Signature
FICO 08: Score decrease between 26-41 points after auto payoff (11.01.21) FICO as of 12.24, EX: 816 / EQ: 825 / TU: 818

Sounds like progress is being made. That's good to hear.

Hopefully this will all clear up on a positive note for you, no one could have imagined all this occuring.

I guess this will teach all of us to have some type of backup in place (like autopay) in case something blindsides our normal way of doing things.
