Hello! I booked a room in a hotel in hawaii. When I check-in, will I need a credit card?? Or can I use my debt card? My highest limit on my credit cards is $500. Does it have to be higher? How does it work?? Will I be okay??
Thanks!

Each hotel has different policies. Some will take a debit card but others might require a credit card be used. I would contact the hotel and make sure you know what they require/accept ahead of time. You don't need an unpleasant surprise at check in.
How long is your stay? You should already know the total charges since it's booked.

Yes, you'll be able to switch cards at check-in. However, know that the hotel will put a big hold on your checking account (via your debit card) to cover incidentals and potential damages. The actual amount of this hold can vary greatly from hotel to hotel. You'll want to ensure that you have enough funds in your account above and beyond this hold in order to spend/withdraw money while you're on your trip. The hotel will maintain the hold at least until the day you check-out and settle the bill, and possibly a few days after that as well.
Your best bet would be to contact the hotel directly to ask what the actual amount of the hold will be, so you are able to plan accordingly.
As a side note, I know in your case with your CL, this isn't really feasible, but remember that in general, credit cards offer a much greater level of protection both in fraud as well as liability, particularly in regards to travel. I recommend using a credit card as often as possible for these types of things, as I've been burned and had my checking account emptied before. Just FYI for others who may come across this as well.
Good luck, my family is from Hawaii. I know you'll have a blast! ![]()

Extremely solid advice!

The one question I have to ask is what did you use to book the hotel? Did you use your credit card for the booking reservation? If you did and was accepted it should be okay to let them hold the funds from your credit card once you arrive at hotel and pay off daily with cash and or debit card the rates owed for the day so that they do not hold additional funds on your credit card.
As stated above different hotels have different policies and it would be best to inquire with them ahead of time.
Also as stated above it is always best to use a credit card for the protection when traveling.
Another possible solution would be to try and ask for a CLI on the credit card depending on the carrier they may be more then willing to increase your limit to help you plan your vacation. Good luck
Thanks for the help everyone! I paid for my hotel and flight for 2 with my debt card. The total came up to $1500. Other than my debt card, I have a credit card with a CL of $500!! Since I already paid for the hotel and 5 day stay, will they still ask to hold my credit card when I check in?
Thanks!

The only ones who know that is the hotel. Just call them and ask. None of us here have a way of knowing their exact policies.
Enjoy your trip though! That's a beautiful place.

Yes, as stated, check with hotel.
However, I'm pretty certain they will put an additional hold on your card for incidentals. This is the hold that will not be cleared until you check-out.
