Credit Counseling Rip-off

A few years ago, my wife at the time decided to split. I was left with 1/2 an income and all of the run up bills. I had all of the credit card companies calling me nonstop. I turned to American Credit Counsels ( ACC ) for help. I was misinformed that they had agreements with all of the banks.  After everything had been paid off ( early )I now have some bad delinquencies showing on my credit reports, during the time I was working with ACC on setting up my repayment plan. I was also told that once the balances were paid off ( all in full, for the entire balances ) that I would be able to reinstate the accounts. False! Everyone of the creditors canceled the accounts after they were paid off. I am now trying to appeal to the credit issuers to see if I can get these late payments if of my report. I would have been better off paying a minimum to the cards while I worked out the details. When money gets tight, avoid the credit counselors, you are better off doing a chapter 11, or 13. Trust me this is worse than a BK on your report!

Sorry that happened....

You could always use that as a reason when you type up GW letters when asking the OCs to remove the lates.

Re: Credit Counseling Rip-off

I've had the opposite effect.  I've been with CPF for three years.  BofA updated my last late to paid on time.  I check my reports every month & everything is reporting as paid on time.  My scores have climbed nicely.

Good Luck with your GW letters.
