Derogatory public record

Hi,  I have only one derogatory record but it seems to really hurt my score. This was a medical bill for $108.00 for my son at a local hospital that he had never been to! When I received the bill I called the hospital and they told me that they would look into it and get back to me. They didn't but when they rebilled me again with no explanation I ignored it. Long story short I began getting collection calls, told them I didn't owe the money and that I would not pay it. When my wife and I started thinking of getting a motgage I checked my FICO scores and there it was. I called the collection agency and the man said that there was nothing that I could do but pay it to get it off my record so I did. Wrong! Not only did I pay a bill I did not owe but it seems the bill that would have fallen off by now has restarted its time on my credit history. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

Re: Derogatory public record

You should have not paid. Start by trying to dispute as "inaccurate".
