I was looking at my most recent credit report, and there is a list of names in the alias section that are variations of my name. My first name and middle initial is Jonathan M and there's accounts listed with John R (my brother) and John M (I guess a hybrid of our names lol) ... Would disputing these alias names on my report delete only the name, or also the account/baddie associated with the name as well?
There is also a baddie from years ago where the credit company completely misspelled my last name. I noticed when I received the credit card, but didn't care enough to change it. Now that it's a baddie, I'm wondering that if I dispute it due to the incorrect last name, if it'll delete the account altogether from my credit report?
Another thing I noticed, I guess because of the alias' ... My grandfather is also John (apparently we like that name in our family) and there is an AMEX account from 25 years ago on my report that was closed in good standing. I'm 31, obviously this is not my account lol, it's an old account of my grandfather's. My question is how is it still reporting if it's that old - I thought stuff rolled off after 7 years (or is that a myth)? I'm almost tempted to not dispute that one as it's probably helping my credit profile with AAOA lol

7 years is for certain derogatory information. Closed accounts in good standing can remain on reports for 10 years.
You'll want to sort out the names to prevent problems down the road. Don't decide based on impact to your score. Get it all correct. If you want to improve your score then idenitify the issues with your reports and get to work on them.

Keep in mind that you don't have just one score. There are many scoring models used by creditors. Even FICO has many models (see also the Understanding FICO Scoring subforum and its stickies). For most models you have a score with each of the 3 major CRA's. Make sure you paying attention to all 3.
Yeah I definitely do want to dispute them all to clean up my report. But as to my original question, will disputing the alias names to get them deleted also delete any accounts that may be on my report associated with those names? Will I have to make a separate dispute for each variation, or can I just call them and give them the whole list of names that shouldn't be there?

Nope. Any incorrect accounts on the report will need to be disputed as well.

Call and give them the whole list.

Awesome, thanks for the clarification!
