Do I need my account number for a Debt Validation Letter?

I know this may seem a silly question, but I checked my CR and I see 2 collections for medical bills for amounts that do not match my records. The CR doesnt give me the full account number. So do I have to call prior to sending a DV letter? Or can I mail the request with the partial number that appears on my CR?

Thank you

No, you dont need an account number.

Some DVs are sent prior to any credit reporting or receipt of any dunning notice.  That is done to place a cease collection bar, thus preventing credit reporting until theiy have first validated.

Has the debt collector sent you a dunning notice?

If so, I would attach to your DV a copy of your dunning notice along with a copy of the portion of your CR that references their collection, which should more than adequately identify the debt to the debt collector.

If you dont have either a dunning notice or credit reporting, then your full name and addresss, along with the name of the OC, should do the trick.
