...and I'm making it 2,106.
Seriously, if your having any issue with the CB's, BBB seems to put a thorn in their side, and issues get taken care of quickly.
Here is my issue...
About a year ago, I went to Free Annual Credit Report (or what ever it's called), and tried to obtain my Credit Report from EQ. It said "your information does not match our records".
So I went and bought my credit report. Guess what? It GAVE it to me.
So it seems a little suspicious that they would not give me my report for free.
I called EQ, and to make a long story short, I faxed my entire life story to them, and they sent me a free report.
I checked the report.
Name: Match
Social Security Numbe: Match
Address: Match
Date of Birth: Match
All the information that is needed to obtain my report, matched.
So a few months roll by and I try again, since I did not actually get my free report (the one they sent don't count), the FACR site said I was able to get one yet again.
So I tried something, I typed all the information in EXACTLY as listed on my report.
Same crap, information does not match records.
So I then I called EQ.
They WILL NOT tell me what the issue is, but wanted to me to BUY a report.
I got on the internet, and read the same thing with quite a few people, and it's part of the 2000+ complaints this company has.
While I don't mind the fact they will give you a hard copy report, it makes it a pain for disputes, since online access is not available.
I had similar problems trying to deal with EQ directly. I was never able to get my free credit report from them and refused to pay them for it. I did file a complaint with the BBB and I have given on them. I just get the outline report from MyFico.
Had the same thing happen, but with Experian. Can't give me my free credit report via annualcreditreport.com but perfectly happy to sell me the same info via Credit Sesame for $9 or whatever it was. Didn't file any complaints but certainly would if it happened again.
It appears all 3 CB's have complaints in excess of 1,000.
Although this is a low number compared to other providers of service, that is still to many.
I think CB's should have more regulations.
I mean after all, credit plays a HUGE role in your life, from getting a Job, a Car, a Home, etc.
The amount of complaints, especially about inaccuracy, is entirely too high.
I filled one with DCU too, they stated that I would be sent "a detailed letter stating why I was denied", I was basically sent a letter stating:
"You were denied membership because we could not identify you".
They had my full credit report, and they asked for my ID and I sent them that and copy of my social security card, they could of least have contacted me.
If they cannot verify you online you have the option to mail your request. I had this happen once. I sent the request via US Mail and got my report within 2 weeks. Very easy to do.
They can give you one by mail, but here is the issue..
1. It takes 2 weeks to get it, so if I want to make a dispute, I have to wait 2 weeks plus the time it takes for the actual process.
2. Equifax WILL NOT tell me what record does not match. Even though they have MY information, they won't tell me what the issue is.
3. Since I typed the information in EQ's site exactly as listed on the CR they sent me last year (none of my personal information has changed), there should not be an issue.
Since they won't tell you what's wrong, and make you wait on the mail, I feel they are illegaly extorting people.
Simple fact is, if they can MAIL you one (which is HIGHLY unsecure since anyone can open it and then steal your Idenity) they should be able to give it to you online.
I've had my mail stolen several times (twice by carrier, once by a unknown person).
So I don't really feel like having a huge packet of information mailed to me that any Tom Dick or Harry could steal and then gain access to.
My experience is that Equifax is the worst and goes out of their way to ignore any actual information you provide depending 99.999 percent on eOscar to automate the verification process. That being said based on a recent CFPB report, Experian is by far the worst as far as complaints (resolved and unresolved).
Here is few other things that grind my gears..
1. Equifax only has 7,000 or so employees, so if you do the math (they serve worldwide), each person is in charge of over 50,000 reports (even less if you consider that everyone working for them doesn't work in actual data processing).
Compare this to the Social Security Administration, which if you run the numbers, each employee is given less than 5,000 files.
Worse yet? CB's know way more about us than the SSA.
2. Equifax and other 2 of the "big 3", sell you products that help prevent your ID being stolen, give you credit scores, and monitoring alerts.
Personally, I don't think that credit bureaus should be a "for profit", due to the fact they are some of the largest holders of pesonal information.
Mail out a request for your free credit report certified mail. Then you'll have a date of their receipt.
Same thing goes for any disputes.
Its convenient to have the instant online option, but not required by law. If you want to hold them to the law, play by the rules to a T so that they can't make excuses and you have hard evidence.
Also, I am one who doesn't believe in the BBB. The only harm they can cause is PR based, and considering we aren't the credit bureau's customer's, I can't imagine them caring too much about the complaints. If Equifax messed up and you have proof, file a CFPB complaint at www.consumerfinance.gov. When Equifax allowed midland to re-enter a tradeline after it was deleted as the result of a dispute, I disputed with EQ. They said everything was confirmed, so I sent a letter to the legal department. They again initiated a dispute, and again it was confirmed as correct. So I filed a CFPB complaint against them, and within 10 days another dispute was shown and immediately the TL was deleted. When someone under the CFPB's power messes up, like EQ, it's in their best interest that they listen. I'd file everything by paper then go to a CFPB next.
