Should I mention the thing about the mail as a part of this? I could include a copy of the letter from my local post office mentioning missent mail if that helps. It doesn't prove anything definitively and of course I should know these bills are due even if I don't get a letter. But didn't know if it would help.
Also, would mentioning that I'm now using autopay to ensure prompt payment help?
I wouldn't mention the mishandled mail. Sounds like you're trying to pass the buck. Take full responsibility, drive it home that you've had a perfect history for 15 years and how devastating a blow this would be. If you have future plans like buying or refinancing a home, mention that and throw in some math to show how much of a loss you'll take. Remind them that in the current economy, a simple mistake like this dropping your score this much could lead to AA and a domino effect. Definitely mention all of the safeguards you've put in place to make sure it doesn't happen again like autopay, calendar reminders, setting the payment early enough that if there's a problem you can rectify it before the due date, etc.
Good luck.
^^ All of that. Tell them to pull your credit report if they need proof that you've been responsible and it's just a one off. If calling and explaining a couple of times doesn't get through, then try the goodwill campaign.
And DEFINITELY get that autopay scheduled as proof.
