Goodwill Letter (Need feedback)

JCPenney

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been a JCPenney cardholder since 19XX, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my shopping experiences with your company.  I am kindly requesting a goodwill adjustment to your reporting to the three credit agencies.  I have two (2) thirty days (30 days) late payments on the above-referenced account in March of 2003 and April of 2004.  Since that time, I have been an exceptional customer ensuring prompt and timely payments.

Because of my improved payment history over the last several years, I generously request you to consider removing the negative payments from my credit report.  ***I ACTUALLY DON’T REMEMBER WHY THESE WERE LATE!!!  I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO SAY.***  I cannot justify why the payments were late, but I sincerely hope that JCPenney is willing to work with me on deleting the negative marks from my credit reports.

Before long, I will be in the market for a new vehicle and subsequently first-time homeownership.  I have been a satisfied customer since 19XX and look forward to a continuing, long relationship with JCPenney.  Your company has been outstanding thus far, and I do highly recommend you to everyone.  Again, I hope that you will respectfully consider my request.  Thank you for your time and attention herein.

You don't need to say why you were late. Or, if you'd prefer to say something, say, "During this period, I went through a financial hardship, but I was able to recover and continued making payments as scheduled.", or something like that.

Re: Goodwill Letter (Need feedback)

A few months ago I used basically the same letter to GW Macy's and it worked. I really had no explanation as to why I was late 30-days in April 2006 - so I said I just couldn't recall.

Give it 30 days - if your GW letter doesn't work the first time - try again. Took me 3 attempts.

Good luck.

Re: Goodwill Letter (Need feedback)

A few grammatical adjustments suggested.

I have been a JCPenney cardholder since 19XX, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my shopping experiences with your company.  I am requesting a goodwill adjustment to your reporting to the three credit agencies.  I have two (2) late payments on the above-referenced account in March 2003 and April 2004.  Since that time, I have been an exceptional customer ensuring prompt and timely payments.

Because of my improved payment history over the last several years, I request you consider removing the negative payment reporting from my credit reports.  I actually do not remember why these payments were late, so I will simply plead ignorance and moments of forgetfulness from the past.  I am not justifying the late payments, and I sincerely hope that JCPenney is willing to work with me on deleting these negative marks from my credit reports.

In the near future, I will be in the market for a new vehicle and a first home.  I have been a happy JCPenney customer since 19XX, and I look forward to a continued financial relationship with JCPenney.  Your company is outstanding, and I do recommend you to everyone.  Again, I hope that you will consider my request.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
