Also, if I were you I would want to figure out how the bureaus got the incorrect SSN (especially if it were the same incorrect SSN across all three bureaus - clearly they got that # from somewhere). The only thing I can think of is an incorrect SSN being put down for an existing installment loan (like a student loan? or an auto loan with a cosigner?) Whether it was you inputting it incorrectly or some admin fat fingering something. I imagine this is how people end up with split files.

Yes, in fact, I was wondering about that as well... I suspect that when I applied for my first card with Capital One, I accidentally put in the wrong SSN, and that's how it all started. But there's no definite proof of that, and I do remember double checking my SSN and everything, so I don't even know.

Did the CRA actually send your credit report to the inquiree?

If you applied for credit, the inquiree had a permissible purpose for the inquiry, so it was not a false inquiry.

The fact that some inaccuracies in the report may have led to denials does not undo the fact that the inquiry was filled and your credit information was provided to another under a permissible purpose.

I would attempt to get the inquiries recoded as soft rather than trying to have them deleted from your credit file.

The fact that others accessed your information cannot be undone, and the CRA is likely to resist any deletion based on inaccuracies.

Yeah, that is true. But what would be the arguments for changing it to a soft inquiry? "Please, at least make it a soft inquiry"?

The argument would be that the report provided inaccurate, at the time, information to the inquiree, resulting in what you consider to be an incomplete review of your application.  Thus, while not asking for deletion of the fact that they inquiry was made and filled, you are asking that the impact of the inquiry be removed from credit reports provided to others, and thus also from scoring, until the info adequately meets the ability of the inquiree to use it for its intended purpose.  The inaccuracy in your specific situation resulted in it per se voiding the usefulness of the report by the inquiree.

Im not sure how long ago you made your last applicaiton, but if it was in the last couple of weeks I would call the reconsideration line for Discover and explain what happened.   It might not make a difference but its worth a shot.  The one thing I would not do is to apply for anything else for at least 6 -12 months.
