Happy to report that I received a letter from Synchrony saying that they found it to be fraudulent after an investigation.
They reiterated that I'm not responsible for anything regarding that account.
I never did see the fake account on my reports.
That's awesome news. I don't think you stated you pursued this further, so even better they figured it out in their end. Hopefully Bill and his higher ups are officially informed of this.

I'm so sorry, OP.
I'm glad Synchrony made this better. A little surprised, but glad for you.
I blame the stores which are pushing their employees to open accounts no matter what.
Meineke pushed me like that. I ended up going ahead and getting (and using) the account but I could tell it was a hard sell.
Best Buy tried it, too. Even to the point of changing my info. I was alert though, and shut that stuff down.
In neither case did I really blame the employee. Late stage capitalism had got hold of the chains and the employees were just trying to survive and succeed at their jobs.
I have 2 Synchrony accounts, one of which is the aforementioned Meineke card. Either one could be closed tomorrow without a tear of regret from me.
You've let me know I don't want to buy from Ashley, hahahaha.
