Help with steps in right direction

Hi,

I am relatively new around here, been reading everything I can.
No sense in boring you with my past credit history, just looking for some direction.
In reading everything I can sometimes I get confused at the order in which to approach handling the stuff on my credit reports.
Do you dispute with the Credit Bureaus first... then when you hear back from them you then go and DV the Collection agencies? If the stuff still doesn't get removed you then try going back to the OC to either PFD or GW? Just want to take things one step at a time.
I had some rough times after a divorce and I'd like to see if I can get the bad stuff removed through GW and then I have medical bills that were not my responsibility (my ex's) that are still out there. Since he still refuses to pay them I'm willing to see if I can PFD them. I need to get a car for my daughter, but at my current scores the finance rate is absolutely horrible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Help with steps in right direction

First before doing anything know what your SOL is
simple SOL

If you dispute or DV  you must be ready to pay IF SOL has not past!

If dealing with a CA  you would DV first (so they do not know that you are aware of them) If you dispute the CRAs notify them.

Dealing with the OC is the the other way around!  You would first dispute and when the CRAs answers that it was verified....then you send the OC letter  NOW  if there is a CA reporting the same debt as the OC  do not dispute until after you DV the CA....because the OC will notify the CA also!!!

You want to take the CA by surprise.

Unless you dispute the OC first...they do no have to answer you.

GW go to paid debts

Take your time & do it right     it is very confusing at first but it really gets easier!!!

ask as many questions as you need!!!  sometime it is how the question is answered....if you do not understand  ask again!!

Re: Help with steps in right direction

Thanks!  SOL in WI is 6 yrs across the board. So if after 6 yrs and it's not paid, it's not worth trying to remove?

How long is it before I would hear back from the CRAs? I sent letters to all 3 of them two weeks ago disputing what I needed to dispute.

Actually all these medical bills I'm disputing with the CRAs have been in collections for several years...of course I had no idea because they were my ex's responsibility and I never received collection notices for them. So if the CRA says they verified the debt, I then DV the CA?

Re: Help with steps in right direction

It usually takes 30-45 days to hear back from the CRAs.

Thanks

Thanks!

Do I wait to hear back from them and see what they have to say before I DV the CA's?  ... or should I just go ahead and DV?

Re: Help with steps in right direction

If you didn't sign for his treatment you are not responsable for the debt......unless in community property state.....then I think that you might be.

What is the DOLA  on these?   within or past SOL?

Re: Help with steps in right direction

Yes, WI, is shared property state... but these bills are for our children, not him. Divorce papers state I paid for the health insurance, he paid the bills. Unfortunately nobody cares about court orders... they state since I am a parent I am still responsible. Only problem is I never received bills or collection notices and my ex just has let them sit and doesn't pay them. I don't give a rat's a** about his credit, but now I'm finally getting back on my feet and I know there's light at the end of the tunnel but his ignorance is hindering my credit.
I figure I will DV the CA if that is the correct way to go?...see if they can produce what they need to show I owe the debt. If they can then I should go to the OC and see if they will PFD?  Is this the correct avenue to pursue?  If it is, should I first wait to hear back from the CRAs or just DV the CA right away?

Thanks again!

Re: Help with steps in right direction

If you can afford to PIF    go to the OC and pay......I wouldn't say a word about the CA........if you can wait 1 or 2 months   then DV the CA........they might want to show paid     you don't want that....you want it off your CR.........If the CA at any time shows paid    send them a letter telling them that you have no memory of paying them....since all reporting must be 100% accurate please as proof of payment....send  copy of cancelled with their (CA) name as payee.

Re: Help with steps in right direction

Sunshine, I had the EXACT situation as you currently have, well almost exact. My ex and I both had insurance when our last child was born. Well, the insurance companies argued over which one should pay the bill, due to my b-day vs. hers, etc. Long story short, nothing got paid. When OC contacted my ex about it, she basically spewed venom at them and told them basically to FOAD. There were six different OC collections on my report. I took my CC in to the office (after calling and making arrangements with them), dangled it in front of them and waited for them to type up the PFD letter on their letterhead. They deleted all six from my CRs and the ex is still carrying them on her CRs til this day.
