How many times can one debt be reported?

I had a pretty bad start to my credit history and have been trying to get things cleaned up.  I've read that a negative reporting can be listed by the OC and then by the CA.  Can more than one CA report the same debt?  I have one account in particular being reported by the OC and 2 or 3 CAs.  Funny thing is, the CA name is almost identical to the other CA but different just enough to show up again on my report.  Please help.  Thanks!

Re: How many times can one debt be reported?

Only 1 OC and 1 CA can report the same debt.  You need to look at the OC reporting....if they show a Bal  then they still own the account.

If they show Bal $0    then they sold the account. CAs by & sell all the time.  Look at the report dates.......The newest is usually the CA that has it.

I would DV all the old ones and only DV the newest if you are past SOL

Re: How many times can one debt be reported?

That's the problem, there are two accounts in particular that show a balance on the OC as well as the CA and there are two that have two CAs reporting the same account.  One has almost an identical name as the other CA.  I think it's the same one but maybe incorporated with two names.  The report that I have does not show when these items will remove, is there a date I should look at on the reports to figure out the SOL?  Thanks.

Amanda, as HD said, only OC and one CA can report the same debt. As soon as it is sold to another CA and they start reporting, then the original CA must quit reporting. They can't report the same debt twice either. SOL goes by your DOFD.
