my father in law and I are on a couple store cards as joint account holders together, so here's the question, if he files a bk will it affect me in any way if the accounts have zero balances? Mods feel free to move if need be.
lenders will close the accounts which would affect your credit scores since it will be showed as closed by grantor.

They could be updated to closed by grantor. I would contact the creditor and ask that the accounts be put into your own name only prior to him filing for BK and if its not possible then they should be closed by you, they would help your FIL if they are closed prior to him filing BK as they will show as good closed accounts that stay around for 10 years rather than IIB that stay as negatives for 7.
