I need your help, please. Got response from GW ltr to Chase. I am now totally confused.

I’ve read a few threads that stated Chase does not read the GW letters (based on the responses from Chase). Clearly, that is what happened with my letter. I just got my reply today.

Brief history, I was a Chase customer for 4 yrs, never missed a payment, received several CLI and then I was offered a better APR with my cred union so I BT’d. Major mistake #1: I removed Chase from my bill paying service and I am still unsure how I could be so stupid, but I missed a payment on the balance of $250 (remainder that couldn’t be BT’d). Mistake #2: I did not know I should have left the account open, so double-goof, I closed the Chase account after paying the $250 in full (30-late).
This is my only ding on my CR. Shortly after the 30 day showed up, Amex and Juniper give me CLDs. I'm no longer the golden customer.

This is what Chase wrote:

-------------------------------

“Thank you for your request to close your account. We have completed our research and want to confirm that your account is no longer in our system. The account was inactive for several months prior to its deletion from our systems and we are unable to determine the date the account was closed”  (I closed it right after I made the $250 payment, 30 days late)

Here’s the part that totally confuses me:  “We are able to remove the ENTIRE ACCOUNT from your credit report.  Please contact us if that is an option for you.”

Please call us toll free blah blah,

I clearly stated this was a closed account and requested the GW removal of the 30 day baddie. I explained I am looking at mortgages, etc. I was very nice and said how much I loved my Chase account and the usual.

The part about removing my entire account from my CR.  ??

What should be my next step?

You can try writing back and explaining that you don't want the entire account deleted and to please remove/reverse the 30 day late. Why did you close the account immediately after a 30 day late?

IMO you lost a lot of bargaining power when you closed the account since you are no longer a customer anymore.

When was the late?

If over 2 years ago - don't worry about it

If your only late- let them delete the account-

I know more now than I did then. Unless you've been hanging out on this board I think most people don't know about bargaining power, or any of that. I also did not know that closing an account would cause fico harm.

I mailed in the balance due and called and closed it. Two days later I found out that was a no no, but it was too late.

The late was in July 07. It is my only late, but if they delete the account, won't that still show the 30 day late? If it was that ez why wouldn't everyone just "delete" accounts. Maybe I am missing something? Sorry, totally new to this....

I would be really suprised they "purged" info from less than a year ago-

I would take the delete-
A recent 30 vs a perfect never late- is a no brainer to me-

If they delete any postive history is gone allong with the late-

That's what confused me Timothy, They purged something from 7/07? Huh?

I had no idea they would delete an account if it had a bad mark; I don't mind if the good goes with it because I have 15 years of good payment on all my other accounts. So I guess I will call and take them up on the offer to delete and see what happens. Thanks for your replies.

Re: I need your help, please. Got response from GW ltr to Chase. I am now totally confused.

Ok, I'm more baffled now.

I called Chase and took them up on their offer to remove the account as stated in their response to GW letter, "we are able to remove" just call us.

The woman I spoke to tried to pull up the account, said there is no such account and that she is not the person who can remove it from my credit report. She gave me the same address I mailed my first letter to - and then told me "it's been years since this account was active".

Smiley Surprised  huh?   It's been 8 months since I closed it. I just don't get this.

And why did they tell me to make the call, if the call wouldn't result in what they were offering?

Re: I need your help, please. Got response from GW ltr to Chase. I am now totally confused.

I'd send a letter back to them at the address they put on the letter telling them you want to take them up on it. If this ends up working, I might close my Chase account, then 9 months later try to get it deleted. I've got a couple 30 day lates on it, the balance is currently $0. I sent them a GW letter about a month ago and they sent me a form letter saying they couldn't delete any accurate info. I would jump at the chance to get the account removed entirely from my credit reports.

Please let us know how it turns out, and Good Luck!

I will for sure. It just dawned on me... when I was on the line with the CSR she tried to pull the account by my SS# too and I was nowhere to be found. If my letter/fax request to remove doesn't work, Should I just dispute it on the cred reports? If they don't have record of me how can they produce anything proving the 30 day late?
