Ideal Utilization?

Friends,

I have two credit cards. Blue Cash Everyday $12700 limit and Discover It Chrome. $8500 limit. Am using 569/12700 on the BCE card and am using 776/8500 on the DSC card. What is the ideal util ratio (individually and overall)? I am in the 740s across the board and would like to hit 800s. No other open lines. Own house free and clear. Are there any good SSLTs now that Alliant is done?

P

Re: Ideal Utilization?

For your situation let one card report a 1-9% bal. pay the other off before the statement date to report 0% bal.

Having 1/3 of accts reporting a bal is best so having a 3rd credit would help.

Re: Ideal Utilization?

Actually 4 cards are needed to hit the less than 1/3 number.  One card reporting utilization between $3 and 8% and three cards reporting $0.

Re: Ideal Utilization?

From what I've learned so far, your UTI needs to be under 8.9%.  It is also recommended to have three revolving tradelines.  Search for the AZEO method if you want to maximize your fico potential.  As for SSL, I think someone will be able to find a CU that has something similar to Alliant. I myself am waiting for it but in the meanwhile, I currently have an SSL with my local Golden 1 CU.

ABCD,

Meant to ask you this so many times but kept forgetting, what happen if a person has 15 credit accounts with 3 accounts carrrying balances but only at 7% total UTI, I understand that it is no longer AZEO, but wouldn't it still under the 1/3 account rule?

Thank you for all your help.  I learn alot from reading your guides.

Re: Ideal Utilization?

OP, with exactly 2 cards you'll want to let one report a $0 balance while the other reports a small balance.  "Small" simply means anything greater than a few dollars up to 8% or so of your credit limit.  With what you have (2 cards) that would yield you the most points.

To the question posed above to ABCD, while I'm sure he'll respond soon enough I'll offer a response as well.  While 3 of 15 accounts is still 1/3 the same way 1 of 5 is, there's a chance that there could be a penalty for "number of accounts with balances" since the number of accounts with reported balances is greater by 2.  Many times this isn't the case, but some have reported it depending on what else they have going on with their profile.  This is the reason why it's always recommended to implement AZEO when maximizing score, because while 3 of 15 may not hurt score more than 1 of 15, nothing will ever be better than 1 of 15.  It's probably best for someone to simply do a test on their profile to see what works for them.  If you go to 3 and see no scoring penalty, you can comfortably say that 2-3 cards reporting balances is just as good as AZEO on your profile.

Re: Ideal Utilization?

I agree with BBS.  3 out of 15 is less than 1/3 so any penalty would be minimal or zilch!

Thank you for the reply.  I'll leave it at 3 accounts with balances and see how it reflects on my scores.  In fact, it should be 3 of 24 accounts to be exact.  After two months, I'll use the AZEO method to compare.  Have to take advantage of those 6 month zero percent financing right now.
