Identity Theft and Credit Reporting...

I discovered a fraudalent account on my credit report.  It was a charge off from Verizon Wireless for an account I never had.  Im going through the process now ( already filed a police report, etc).  However, both Verizon and my Identity Fraud rep said that it could take up to 6 months to remove the negative item from my credit report, even though the investigation is relatively quick.  They did say I will get a letter saying that i'm not liable, etc.  However, has anyone experienced how quickly something like this would be removed?  If it is that long, is it hurting my score?  I'm not seeking new credit, so the letter won't be a huge deal for me.  But I am worried about peridoc credit account reviews, and I generally like to see how my credit is doing.

Also, I filed disputes with all three bureaus...would that help expedite the removal, or would it reduce the impact on the score?

Re: Identity Theft and Credit Reporting...

That is incorrrect.

You will be filing a request to block any reporting related to the information.

Under FCRA 605B(a) they must block within 4 business days if you meet the requirments of seciton 605B.

Make sure to include proof of your identity, the polcie report (which the FCRA calls an identity theft report), and the required statement that you did not authorixe the account/transaction asserted to have used your identity.

At least one CRA requires the standard FTC identity theft affidavit as the form of meeting the required statement that it was not authori\ed by you, so to be safte, include both a copy of your police report and the executed FTC affidavit.
