Re: Identity theft

If your intent is to place a fraud alert in your credit file, then you must follow the procedure set forth i FCRA 605A.

I would not rely on a credit repair organization to perform that function on your behalf.

If you are requesting only an initial fruad alert (i.e., good for only 90 days), then simply send a request to the CRA.

However, if you are requesting an extended fraud alert, such alerts are based on an assertion of an actual fraud/identity theft, and require the additional submission of an identity theft (police) report.

Re: Identity theft

This is a tough one because it's his sister.

Legally I think the path is very clear: contact the police and have the sister charged with fraud. Then show the complaint and court files to Chase and they will presumably back off or at least the file can be blocked on credit reports.

But that's a tough one, getting your own sister charged criminally. I think that's something the OP's friend will need to wrestle with.
