Inactive Credit Cards? Good or bad?

I have four credit cards: Chase Freedom (4.7k), BofA (5.5k), Capital One (11k), and a store card for 2.7k. I only use BoA card and I never had any late payments. All the other cards have zero balance on them.

I've heard some ppl say that closing a credit card will hurt your credit score due to decreased total CL. But is having three inactive cards in my wallets a good thing? Would banks close my account die to inactivity? Please share thoughts, thanks

Re: Inactive Credit Cards? Good or bad?

Yes, closing a CC will definitely remove the CL and decrease your overall CL and increase your utilization.  Not good if you tend to carry larger balances.

Some will close the cards due to inactivity. You can switch around which card you use to carry a balance to avoid those situations happening.

Re: Inactive Credit Cards? Good or bad?

Try to keep your accounts active.

In addition to the lenders seeing the tradeline idle, there's apparently an "inactivity" flag somewhere in the report data where the tradeline may be unilaterally discounted.

Certainly should be using the Freedom assuming you eat out once in the next 2.5 months Smiley Happy.  Doesn't need much, pack of bubblegum once every few months is more than sufficient to keep the tradeline valid.  I just toss my tradeline farms (cards that I have just to bulk up my report, rather than regular use ones) to pay for my snacks / water to/from my hobby once every month or two.

Losing one of your highest limit cards, for example CapOne, you would most likely take a big hit in overall utilization.  If you have a recurring expense like Netflix, put that on a card you seldom use for activity.

It's really the increase in utilization (balances/limits) that hurts.

It's not inherently good or bad.  If you're not monitoring them it can be a bad thing due to potential fraud.

You'd have to check with your creditor(s).  Some do, some do not.
