I have an account on my report for AT&T which was sold to bur co col in 2004 and then sold to palisades in 2004, I never opened this account and disputed it, now it says date reported Feb 07 also i have never received a letter from any of these companies. What should i do? Do i need to send a letter to Palisades asking for verification of this account and if so what should letter say.

You will haveto stand on your head while dancing a jig to get this one off.  Start by requesting verification but when I got burned on the same type of thing I went to the FTC and it was removed within months.

I've always wondered how that dispute option works! I mean, obviously the creditor (or bill collector) have some file saying you owe money, so when the bureau ask for varifiction, they would just send that. That still does not prove that you owed money.

I remember a bill collector was trying to make me pay for debt I did not owe! i wrote them a letter telling them to not call me again until they varified that I owed the money. I told them I will not accept a printout of their incorrect information as varification! Basically they stopped calling me, but sent the accounts to someone else.

May be an option for you would be to file that you have been a victim of identity theft.

"Start by requesting verification"

Verification is nothing more than requesting confirmation from the CA that they have your correct mailing address. What you're looking for is validation. Also note that validation right comes from FDCPA. Original creditors are not bound by that (only Fair Credit Billing Act and FCRA).

Re: Item dispute question

You have to watch that account very closely.  It will continue to be sold around and re-aged.  Re-aging debt is illegal, but it is done because collection agencies know most people don't know how to fight it.  Each time it is re-aged you can send a letter to the new collection agency citing the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).  If they continue to report the new date (other than the original delinquency) you can file a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).  I have personally spoken with the attorney who handled the 1.5 million dollar fine against NCO Group for the same games.  He was clear with me on how they enforce the FCRA, and they will go after more companies for similar violations.

***** This message is not legal advice and does not address any other issues, such as (but not limited to); statute of limitations for legal enforcement, defenses to legal enforcement, issues that could arise from contacting collection agencies regarding a debt that can still be legally enforced, possible actions a collection agency can take in addition to reporting, etc...  *****   Sorry...........I have to put that to cover my @$$ - thanks for understanding (I hate sounding like a lawyer).
