Not sure if anyone can actually ballpark figure it, but if you do hire a lawyer to help with credit woes, how much do they generally cost? 

I have 2 judgements, one which I knew of, the other had no idea until like a month ago (happened apparently 2003).  A few medical collections I'd like help removing.

MyFico gives great advice, however, I am terrified that I will screw myself over.  I'm kind of scared to start this process myself.

It depends.

For FCRA and FDCPA violations, particularly if one can show willful non-compliance, the lawyer might not cost you a dime, up front. If they believe they have a solid case, then they can either settle and take a third, or go to court and collect their fees outta the defendant. If it's really bad, willful non-compliance means punitive damages. Sky's the limit.

Some things require a lawyer, others not so much. You can likely consult with a lawyer no charge. If your financial situation is tight, or if the attorney sees you getting a bad deal, they might represent you pro bono. More than likely though, if you have to get a lawyer involved, it's going to cost you something. However, they'll probably be very up front with you during the consult.

If it's a collection, you're better off posting some details here and pursuing it yourself. With judgments, you might want or need a lawyer.
