Hi all! I have 2 collection accounts for medical debt I accrued when my daughter was born. Can anyone explain the new law to me that went into effect on 7/1/22? The accounts have been in collections since November 2021 - isn't the new rule that I have a year to pay them before they go on my credit report? Thanks in advance!

To the best of my knowledge the law is not retroactive. You don't say how much the debts are but you are still within the window to contact the hospital or provider and set up payments. They typically will do low payments as long as you make them. The debts are so new there is the risk that they go straight to a lawsuit to collect because of the new law limiting data on credit reports.

I believe the new law is 12 months . You have 12 months to pay medical collections before they will report. It was 6 months prior to the change. But as stated above I am not sure if this is for collections prior to the new law?
