Name Correction

My name is spelled incorrectly on my Experian and Equifax report.   Maybe trivial, but it bothers me that my name is spelled 3 different ways.   They also have my first name and the last name of an ex-boyfriend listed as "other names."  That trips me out as I NEVER had any joint accounts with him.  The only thing I can possibly think of is, I added him to my cell phone plan.  He was deleted off years ago.  Can I get these errors removed?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: Name Correction

Hi Sadie -

Yes, you can have it fixed. Easiest way to do so - and ensure it's done correctly - is to file a dispute by mail - you can download the dispute forms from the credit bureau websites. You'll need to include copies of a couple of forms of ID -- acceptable ID types should be listed on the dispute form that you download. Mail that out and give them a couple of weeks to update the corrections. They'll let you know when the update is complete.

You could also try disputing online - but in my experience, by mail worked out better because the online dispute to remove name variations resulted in the removal of only one... as opposed to all 5 incorrect variations. My mailed dispute worked perfectly... perhaps because I was able to be more detailed in the correspondence.
