New Way to See Your Experian FICO 8 Bankcard Score Free Every Month

FYI

There's a new way you may be able to see your FICO score for free every month. First Bankcard, a division of First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO), is now offering its customers a free FICO score each month when they log into their accounts. The company issues cards for more than 600 financial institutions, co-brands and affinity partners, so you might be eligible for this and not even know it!

I have an FNBO Visa so this benefit is available to me, but they never notified me... I found it through an article on Facebook.

Upon logging into my FNBO Visa account, I clicked on the "Services" tab and scrolled down to see a link that said, "View Your FICO Score - Every month you can access your FICO® 8 Bankcard Score for free."

I clicked on the link and it says, "Your FICO® 8 Bankcard Score, pulled on 12/11/2013 from Experian, is the same score we use to manage your account.

Every month you can access your FICO® 8 Bankcard Score for free."

The scale is 250 - 900 max. I was at 843.

It also gives "Key Score Factors" associated with your FICO® 8 Bankcard Score... the top factors that affected the score... and actions you can take to improve it."

My Key Score Factors were a "lack of recent installment loan info" and "too many accounts with balances" (even though I have zero debt and pay my credit card balances in full every month... but I have 5 major credit cards and 1 Chevron card... I think I had balances report on 3 cards, possibly 4. To optimize your score, only allow one balance to report at a time).

AFAIK, all FICO scores, regardless of version, have a range of 350-850. If this range is 230-900 it is not a "true" FICO score. If it is indeed not a true FICO score, they should not use "FICO" in their description. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.

Not necessarily true, there are like dozens of different version of FICO score, one would indeed by the "bankcard enhanced" version of FICO from FICO08.

There are other ranges for different versions of the FICO score.  Not all are 300 - 850.

In that case...there are too many posts here erroneously stating that scores not within the 300-850 range are "FAKOS." When I first registered here, that was one of the first things I "learned." Therefore, how do we know whether a score sent to us by a credit card company such as GECRB is indeed an internal score or another variant of another version of FICO?

As others have said FICO scores really can vary, including using score ranges that can be quite different from "300 - 850."

My Amex BCE approval process earlier this Spring cited an EXPERIAN "FICO" Score Range of 350 - 850.  Likewise, and at about the same time, my Citi Diamond Preferred MC approval letter cited EQUIFAX with a Score Range of 250 - 900!

I thought I was doing relatively well with my "myFICO" scores (see signature), and was shocked to see that my TU score of 750 was considered to be only 718 over on my Discover account statement, ostensibly using a different FICO scoring model!  Let the FICO Shopper BEWARE . . . ?

FICO Score 8: EQ 823 EX 817 TU 825 **** VantageScore 4.0: 825 **** VantageScore 3.0: EQ 823 EX 826 TU 825
TOTAL CL (6 cards): $141.0K **** INQUIRIES 2 yrs (1 yr): EQ 0(1) EX 0(0) TU 0(0) **** UTILIZ: 1 % **** GOAL: FICO Score 8: 840+
r>>
Amex BCE 30K || NASA FCU Rewards Visa 30K || Chase Sapphire Visa Signature 21.5K || PayPal Extras MC 20K
CITI Diamond Preferred MC 25.0K || Discover it 14.5K **** CLOSED 7 cards **** GARDENING since 9-26-2014

You are, of course, correct; however, that's so commonplace in online communities (and other areas of life too I might add), one may as well wish the sky to be some other color than blue.

In this case the majority of FICO's are indeed: 300-850; however, the FICO '08 Bankcard enhanced and also their NextGen/Pinnacle score run out of a different metric.

You can still tell a tremandous amount from the score range, vis a vis a FICO score in the 250-900 range, hello Bankcard Enhanced '08; but something like GECRB where it's IIRC 300-650 or whatever, hi internal scoring model!  Also, FWIW, if it says FICO, it is, and if it doesn't, it pretty much isn't and that still nearly universally holds.

We can't (without absurd levels of annoyance and difficulty in the lithium interface) go back and rewrite posts; however, we can, and should, learn and pontificate better for the future.

Re: New Way to See Your Experian FICO 8 Bankcard Score Free Every Month

The RANGE of scores has nothing to do with FAKO vs FICO.... If the score is generated using one of Fair Isaac's scoring models, its a FICO score, regardless of the range of values.... If its not generated using an official Fair Isaac scoring model (tip offs are words like "Vantage score") THEN its not a Geniune FICO, and is called a FAKO

For example, I work as a mortgage underwriter... a typical Tri-Merge (all 3 bureaus) credit report for a mortgage will have FICO scores using the following models..

Experian using a Fair Isaac v2 FICO model with a score range of 320-844

Trans Union using a FICO Classic 04 model with a score range of 309-839

Equifax using a FICO Beacon 5 model with a score range of 334-818

These are ALL perfectly valid FICO scoring models, and all have slightly different ranges.... FICO 8 Bankcard score is simply a different model with a different range, but still a very legitimate FICO score created by Fair Isaac.... Its just not a score that your typical mortgage lender will use.

This is why your FICO score will likely vary between the 3 credit bureaus... because they all use a different FICO licensed scoring model.

Always consider the source, validate and corroborate.  Any discussion forum site can contain incorrect information, mistaken assumptions, overly broad generalizations, etc.

Don't overlook the stickies. This is in the Understanding FICO Scoring subforum and mentions that not all FICO models adhere to the 300 to 850 scoring range:
