Two possible reasons:
1. The account number was truncated on the credit report for security purposes (i.e., they don't list your entire account number).
2. The poster who provided the sample PFD letter didn't want to give the whole world his account number.
You should use the entire account number in your PFD letter so they can match your payment with the correct account.
