Past due infraction On Credit Card - lost 85 points

Need help on what to do for next steps. My FIFCO score was close to 850 and recently dropped to 730 due to me not paying my capital one credit card bill on time. Got past 30 days. I always pay my entire balance on all CC, but missed this bill as evidently I went paperless and didn’t know that. I never do paperless as I’m a busy executive with little time. So finally got a paper bill late notice sent to me and immediately paid off entire balance. I rarely use this credit card (capital one). I planned to call captial one today and try to get to someone high enough to remove the past due infraction, but thought I would ask this group to improve my chances of clearing this up. I’m praying that there is a chance to clear this up and not have to start over again. I’m investor too so credit score is important to me. Please help!

A good will campaign is all you can do now, but Capital One is a tough nut to crack by all accounts.

The good news is that the baddie, if you are not able to get it removed, will hurt less as it ages.

NFCU Platinum $50k | Amex Delta Platinum $25k | Elan Financial $19.7k | Chase Freedom Unlimited $16k | Bank Americard $16k | Discover IT $13K | NFCU Flagship Rewards $10k | GS AppleCard $5.5k | Citi Simplicity $3k

You can try the goodwill route OP (as mentioned above), but these outcomes will definitely vary as the lender has reported the information to the CRAs accurately.

Even as a busy executive, and with the paperless statements option, email notifications are sent periodically by Capital One, so as your payment due date lapsed the first time (i.e. 30 days), there certainly were additional notifications or alerts that should have raised some concern. Placing calendar reminders is another option, autopay, or even having a personal assistant can easily help manage those tasks if life is too busy.

I would call and call and call and then call some more until someone changed it.

I always pay at least double my minimum payment the minute my statement is cut, this prevents this issue.  I then go in and pay the balance before its due date to prevent interest.  I know it does not help your situation, but $100 would have prevented this mess.

Good luck!

Re: Past due infraction On Credit Card - lost 85 points

All have provided great advice.  I've personally not had any experience with goodwill campaigns.  Other's who have with C1 particularly will likely have better advice.  But I have 4 accounts with C1 and when (if it works for you) I threatened to close an account over a concern (not a late) they were amenable base on my past payment history and age of accounts.  So I suggest the goodwill campaign, but maybe also a continued pursuit of trying to get to the right person, with the threat of closing if your history supports it, could have a positive result.  Keep trying all avenues.

All profiles are different and I've read here a cleaner profile with age, thickness and high scores may have a more devastating affect with a single late than those that don't have those characteristics.  Sounds like this may apply to you?  I can personally attest to a single 30D at 6Y+ age having a 24 -50 pt affect on my scores across the 3B's.  That's the gain I received when they were removed, 24 at 6Y10M, 50 at 6Y1M (TU). So although the affect may decrease, it could still be significant. But the 1B (EX) that held on to that late the longest, before it was removed, other negative impacts (higher UTL crossing thresholds, greater # of accts reporting, INQ, new acct) didn't have as great of an impact as the other 2 clean files.  All that to say, the cleaner, the higher the score, the worst a slip up like this may hurt.

Just be aware, there have been stories here of people who called and threatened CapOne with account closure, and the accounts were closed right on the spot, faster than they could react. Whether it was a valid closure or the CSR misinterpreted the threat as a request I have no idea. But CapOne will close an account, and they can do it very fast.

Just something to keep in mind - be sure you're careful in your wording when talking to them if you do elect to use the threat of closure.

Was not my experience many many years ago.  But if this is a known thing, then I agree, be careful with your language.
