Preapprovals?

How exactly do pre-approvals work? I keep getting a thing for Target that I'm preapproved (on my receipt from the cashier). And it's happened a few other stores too. I haven't received anything in the mail for a while, but the latest target thing got me thinking. How do they know to pre-approve me? I haven't applied for anything in AGES, and my scores aren't the greatest (TU626 and the others within 8 pts in both directions).

Do stores/ccc do soft pulls? Do they check how much I have in my bank account when I use my debit card? Is there something about the speed at which my payment goes through?

I'm just curious as to how this works. Having gone to NO-preapprovals to a few a month, I'm just wondering.

Thanks!

Re: Preapprovals?

they just want to get your attention and want you to apply for the card. pre-approvals do not necessary mean that you will be approved. That'll be based on your credit history when they do a hard pull on your CR.

Re: Preapprovals?

I am guessing here, but I think a preapproval at Target means that you are (a) alive, and (b) have shopped at Target.  I think those are the two requirements  Smiley Happy

well, i shop at target, and have not gotten the pre-approval on my receipt. Guess I must be dead, and didn't know it yet.

Better get to the Dr. and get checked out.

Re: Preapprovals?

OK, so maybe you have to use a check or CC.

I don't read all the stuff on my receipts, so I don't know if I am preapproved or not  Smiley Sad

Re: Preapprovals?

I believe in Target's case they are tracking based on your past purchases.  If you've ever returned something they have your name and address on file.   I used my preapproval and got a Target Visa with a 2500 limit.   If you need a TL from what I understand Target almost always approves you for a redcard at the very least.

Re: Preapprovals?

Has anyone noticed on their Target receipt that
they are targeting/analyzing purchases?

My receipt averaged the amount I spent on
healthcare products.

I will use a different card next time, so
Target can't use a smart system based on
my card/s or purchases.
