Teen Credit

I want to give my teen a credit card, but I don't want to report to their credit report.  I though I could do this with a business card, but amex wants a SSN I believe now.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Teen Credit

Is there a specific card you want them to use?

When I tried to add my wife to my Amex BCP account, she was denied due to a previous derogatory relationship.

Then they told me they could give me a 2nd card on my name. Thought that was unusual, but I accepted and that's the card she's used for that account for a few years now.

I think most banks will not do that though.

Another trick is to allow someone to add your card to their mobile wallet, aka: Apple Pay, Google Wallet, etc...

That could be done for multiple users, but if using the card naturally doesn't work for mobile payments, then that may not work.

Re: Teen Credit

Wondering why you don't want it to report? When my grown kids were teens they had established credit and a great foundation with the credit agencies.

Re: Teen Credit

As @DoppelgangerD said mobile wallet or just give them one of your cards.

If you make them an AU even if they don't ask for SS#, they might be linked and

report.

Re: Teen Credit

Thanks,

I should have added, they are using my USB Altitude Go, and both phyiscal and mobile wallet versions. It's working for the time being.  I was hoping something like a Corporate Card which is truly not linked to their name/ssn.

Re: Teen Credit

I had the opposite problem.  I wanted my 13yo son to report.  But when I added him as an AU to my citi DC, they never asked for a social so I am assuming it is not reporting.  So, there's your answer............ citi.   Smiley Happy

Re: Teen Credit

I had my teen on a few of my cards as an AU when she was under 18.   On her 18th Birthday, she had a score above 780 on all three bureaus.  The same day she applied for an AMEX.  She was preapproved for all the cards and decided on the Blue Cash Every Day.  In February she was approved for a Discover, and in April a Chase Freedom Flex.  Her scores last checked are  between 760 and 780.
