So bottom line then, is there ANY benefit to showing a maxed out credit card to the bureaus on the statement date and then Paying In Full before the due date? Or is that just stupid to do?
No benefit. However, steady use of the card does help.
You can use the card heavily and then paydown balance prior to the statement cut date. That avoids a high utilization penalty. In most cases a high interim balance can be a high balance (HB) listed for the account. Some posters believe large HBs with perfect payment history may entice card issuers to give higher CLIs.
@Thomas_ThumbIn general and for many lenders I would tend to agree. Capital One reports the highest posted balance as the HB regardless of the statement balance. That being said I do think they seem to like reporting a significant balance (but not maxing it out). As for Discover, after the CLI I got when a secured card was unsecured, I got denied CLIs on multiiple occasions until the first AR that occured after I let ~29% balance report. The first attempt after that AR I was given a CLI. Also, just to vent my frustation for the Nth time, it drives me nuts that Discover and Amex report only the highest statement balance as HB while Capital One reports the highest posted balance as HB.
I would recommend not worrying about playing games to get CLI.
Just use you cards like normal and pay them off after the balances post.
If you are worried about it, pay off almost everything before statements cut a month or two before asking for a CLI or new account.
I rotate my cards and make sure a balance posts every few months to keep them all "active."
Achieving higher limits on some cards can actually help you achieve higher limits on others.
Your CR score does not have a utilization memory. Maxing out a card may drop you10 points and paying it off may give you 10 points.
Show usage and smart descisions and your accounts will grow.
