Hello I just found out that someone used one of my credit card numbers in Canada at a Lancome department store. Not sure if they used an actual card or somehow just used the number. I informed CC company who has cancelled the card for me. There were two charges on the same day for $219.44 each.
My question is should I be worried about potential identity theft? I checked all of my other CC's and bank accounts and they are fine. I just purchased my FICO scores two weeks ago so I did not want to have to purchase them again to see my credit report/. I also did the annual credit report about four months ago so that's not an option.
I would be on guard, though the crook likely cloned your card somewhere and created a new one using your info. I would then consider contacting the police and have them file a report for ID theft. You can use this report as a record of fact just in case there were other charges and to get your money back if the CCC is giving you grief. I'd also look over your card statements and check for other instances, if any. Finally, you can get all 3 reports for free if you suspect ID theft. Go to each website and you'll find links to get them for free. I doubt that your reports were impacted.
I got hit twice like that in the past year. The first time someone cloned my BofA CC and tried to buy stuff at 2 different Staten Island CVS stores (and I'm in VA) but failed. I called the police and the detective said there was a recent rash in the area where someone is cloning the cards, likely a restaurant or gas pump. He said the card physically has to be in their possession to clone it. The second happened while in the middle of closing on our first home. Wachovia caught it after they tried to buy bed sheets from a store in India.
In the case of BofA, they reissued a new card within a couple of days and reported a new TL w/ the org. open date. Wachovia was in the process of being bought by WF and WF changed the TL's acct number and changed the CCC name...no extra TL.
I had a similair experience a month ago. Two fraudulent charges for over $600.00 one on my credit cards. I caught the one charge a little over a week after it was posted to may account. The other charge had not posted yet but the fraud department asked me about it on the phone call. The account was closed and a replacement account was created and had the cards in a week. Also, no new accounts or inquires before or since. Thankful for zero liability on fraud charges. I also now use a credit monitering service that has some identity theft protection features as a part of the service.
