I was trying to sign up for Verizon FIOS internet at the apartment I'm moving into next month (because Spectrum sucks as a provider and there aren't many other internet options in that area apparently, despite being in a large city, but that's irrelevant). I got all the way to the point where the agent told me, "to move forward and determine if there would be a deposit to start service, I need to run a credit check." I asked her what they check for, and she said they only check for unpaid balances. I said unpaid balances to Verizon only, or unpaid balances like medical bills too? She couldn't really give me a straight answer. I asked her if it was a SP or HP, and again she couldn't really give me a straight answer.
So I'm hoping that someone here has some insight.
1. Is the credit check they run for this purpose a SP or HP? I have 7 total inquires on my report, 3 of which will fall off this summer/fall but regardless, I don't want to add any more.
2. Which bureaus are they checking?
3. Are they checking for unpaid balances with Verizon only, or are they checking for unpaid balances on my credit report in general? The only negatives I have on my report are medical bills.
When I signed up for FIOS, it was a HP on Equifax. I still had a few baddies on my report and had no problems signing up for service.
Hope that helps!

When I got FiOS around 10 years ago, it was a HP. Don't remember the bureau. They're not so much checking for something specific as trying to figure out if they should require a deposit or other security measures to protect themselves. Good credit doesn't have to pay a deposit.
