So I had a weird situation recently and I'd love anyone's take on what the heck may have happened.
I recently (about 2 months ago) joined NFCU and get a rewards card with them last month. I have not used this card at all - in fact, I haven't used anythign with NFCU at all yet. I received the card, activated it and then the next day I had to fly out of town so I left the card with my others in the safe. To be fair, I forgot about it.
Friday I got a notification from NFCU of a declined transaction. I immediately called them because I haven't used this card at all and certainly didn't use it right then. They confirmed it was declined for an online purchase because the zip code was incorrect (confirmed card #, security code and expiration were correct). I checked and sure enough, the card is still exactly where it has been this entire time: in my safe. No one but me has access to this.
I did a whirlwind check of all other accounts and there is nothing amiss and NFCU shut down the card and is sending me a new one.
If it was just the card number I'd assume someone randomly made up a number but to match a card number and expiration date and security code and use my name on the order and ONLY miss the zip code really seems suspicious. How could someone have all that information without having access to my card or my account?
Internal theft of information or a breech of their data is most likely what has happened. When I had a Chevron Visa it was canceled due to fraudulent charges, two subsequent accounts were then breeched without me ever using it in a transaction one without me ever having activated it. That told me it was internal theft and manipulation of the account.
