What do I do about a fraudulent inquiry?

I received notice through my TrueCredit monitoring service that someone attempted to apply for check cashing privileges at a Stop and Shop 4 states away from where I live. I checked with Stop and Shop and they claim that there is no record of any account in their system with my driver's license or SS#, so either the attempt was a typo and it was rejected since the person's address/ID didn't match my SS#, or it was a fraud attempt and it failed for the same reasons. I noticed however that it was reported to Equifax and it caused my real FICO score to jump a few points, which is odd. That said I want the hit removed from my report regardless, as it was not me who made the request for check cashing privileges. What is the best way to deal with this? A dispute with Equifax? Stop and Shop doesn't keep records of applications that fail. Should I also file a police report with my local department to have them get in touch with the town in the other state's department?

I would file a police report. However, I may fall short of filing a fraud alert with each CRA. I would, if my state permitted, place a freeze on each CRA making it harder to verify identity. I would also make sure I was subscribed to a CMS like TrueCredit and I would pull a hard copy of each CR monthly to look at the hard and soft pulls.

Check out the Fair Credit Reporting Act for procudures to deal with unauthorized access to credit files.  It is a crime.
