What is the best way to handle this SCAM!!!

Some collection agency guy recently called me and said he was collecting on a debt from one of my old closed credit cards.  He had my SSN, DOB, address, everything, so it was believeable, except for the fact that I didn't have an outstanding balance when I closed the card.  And there is no record of this debt he is talking about on my credit report--any of them! So it seems to me that someone got a hold of my identity and/or has access to my credit report, and is just trying to make up a debt.  I researched it, and apparently this firm does this to a lot of people, so I wanted to know the best way to make them pay, not only for having my information and for attempted fraud/scam, but in a way that will keep them from continuing this because it seems pretty easy to fall for this.

Impossible is only impossible at the end of time, when you can no longer do anything.

According to FDCPA, now that he has made initial communication, the CA must send you a written letter within 5 days.

I would file complaints with your AG, the BBB, and the FTC regarding this.

If you really feel your information has been compromised, then you can put a security freeze on your reports.
