Why did TU "delete" complete TL's and I only disputed the balance owed?

Hello FICO Family,

My question and confusion comes from TU. I had two CC's that was "closed by grantor". One was GEMB/Lowes and the other was AMEX Clear Card. The GEMB/Lowes was reporting a $882 balance and AMEX $406 balance. I had PIF both cards and wanted to decrease my balances on my CR by that $1,300 odd dollars. So I disputed the balance owed with TU and EQ.

The very next day TU emails stating the dispute process had been completed and here is the results. Both accounts were showing "DELETED". Why would they do that I had a excellent history with both CC's and I didn't want the entire TL removed just a $0 balance to report. What action can I take to right this wrong. The dispute is still in process with EQ.

CRAs are not normally the deciding party on account deletions from your CR, but there are exceptions for old, closed accounts.

Are you sure they did a total account deletion, and not just a deletion of individual items?

If an OC account is still open, and not closed by the OC, then the CRA cannot delete it from your CR.  Only the OC can post a deletion.

They dont do this, because they still want the reporting to reinforce their collection of unpaid debt.

Once an OC has closed an account, either by notice to you or the CRA, or the posting of a CO or CA, the OC has zero incentive to then also delete the entire account.  They want to preserve its prior reporting in the even of any further attempt to collect the unpaid debt.

Why would the CRA not want to delete a closed account?  Simple

The data they have stored in the account establishes at least a prima facie case of your dates of delinquencies on the account, and thus the fall-off dates of those delinquencies, whether the account is open or closed, at 7 or 7 1/2 years from the DOFD on the OC account.

Once an account is closed by the OC, then no firther indiv delinquencies can occur.  Once all of the reporting periods of FCRA 605(a) have expired, which for OC account delinquencies is 7 or 7 1/2 years, it becomes kinda irrelvant, so most CRAs have set up policies to delete some accounts after 10 years.  A reasonable cushion for them.

So, what was the closing date, and date of delinquencies on the OC account that you assert the CRA unillaterally deleted?

These were not CO's and they was closed in October '09. So I was paying the last of the balance off that was remaining when they closed the accounts. I was never late and would like for my payment history to remain. I only had the cards 2 years but my AoAA is only 4 yrs anyway.
