collection information

There was a collection account added to my credit report eqx, in March of 2008. I never received any letter from this collection agency and was not aware of the debt at all. Once I received the alert from my fico I checked my email and that was when I noticed the collection added to my report. I was able to get the information about the collection from the address that was listed on the myfico alert page.
I spoke with a representative there and they promised to send me something to verify my obligation to the debt. What I received was a copy of the original collections letter that I should have received. I noticed that the letter was dated the 20th of February and the information was added to my credit report on the first of March. Should I have been given the normal 30 days to at least validate the debt before the information could be added to my credit report. I did notice that the bill was something that was generated on my sons college campus and the University never sent my any information regarding the debt. They do have my address and they know that any information should be forwarded to our home address. They have sent correspondances to our home address before. My son's say that they did not receive any bills from the school. I did pay the bill immediately after finding out the it was due although it had been added to my eqx credit report. I want to know do I have the right to fight the adding of the information to my credit account because of how the collection agency handled the situation.
