I have several accounts on my credit file that were not paid a number of years back, but were written off by the creditors and accounts shown as closed. Right before the maximum length of time for a negative report to remain on my credit file expired, I found out that the account was sold to another collection agency, and the time period started all over again. Now, there's going to be another 7 years before this one clears my record. Is this legal, and do I have any recourse against the new creditor for doing this?
Similarly, I have some accounts that were actually paid off to a collection agency, and my credit report showed them as paid. But, now different collection agencies are showing them as unpaid from the original account holder as though they have purchased the account, and they are sending me letters of demand and calling my home. What can I do about these situations?

Please read the links below. They will help you to understand how things work.
Negative accounts fall off your CR 7 - 7.5 years from the DOFD. It does not matter if the account was sold 20 times, the account will still fall off from the DOFD. Selling the account does not extend the amount of time something stays on your CR. The time period does not start over.
If you have proof that these accounts were paid, send the new CAs a DV letter.
How old are these accounts you are talking about?
