fraud alert placed

today i received a letter from ally bank saying they needed to speak with me asap.   come to find out, on jan 27th 2015 someone tried to open 5 accounts using my information.   told them it wasnt me and they suggested i place a fraud alert on my credit.    i did that, i didnt notice anything on my equifax report yet, but that could show up any time i guess.   how will this fraud alert affect my credit score?  or will it?   does this mean that whenever a request is made for credit using my social, the credit grantor must call me at the numbers i provided to verify things?    also, does a hp or sp still impact my credit profile even if the inquiry wasnt made by me?    is there anything you guys can suggest other than a 90 day fraud alert that i can do to protect my credit/identity?    whoever did this used all my correct info except my current new address. they used an old address i had a few years ago when i had anthem in my name only.    i still have anthem, but its on a family plan on my wifes account. so this could be anthem related.     i have equifax monitoring but nothings showing up yet out of the ordinary.

thanks.....

HP only does, if you have fraudulent HPs then you are an attempted victim of ID Theft and I would read this thread http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/General-Credit-Topics/Victim-of-Identity-Theft-What-To-Do-to-Protect...

s there anything you guys can suggest other than a 90 day fraud alert that i can do to protect my credit/identity  Put all your reports on ice, victims of ID theft can have this done for free otherwise there are fees involved with doing it and they are set by the state you live in. whoever did this used all my correct info except my current new address. they used an old address i had a few years ago when i had anthem in my name only.    i still have anthem, but its on a family plan on my wifes account. so this could be anthem related.     i have equifax monitoring but nothings showing up yet out of the ordinary. I also would have all former addresses removed from your CRs

thanks.....

Re: fraud alert placed

thank  you for your reply, it is appreciated.    i just completed an online dispute with TU to have old info removed.   im going to put a freeze on my reports.   hopefully this will  prevent any damage to my identity.

Re: fraud alert placed

I work in the fraud department for a credit card company so I am very knowledgeable about this subject. Anthem has recently had a public data breach so you are correct most likely your information was compromised from them. Usually contacting the CRA they will put a free 90 day alert on your CBR. Now if you file a report with the police they will extend it for 7 years. If anyone applies using your info a hard inquiry will be done but credit will not be granted unless further verification is complete. Additional authentication can be done in numerous ways they may send you a letter, call out to you or even ask questions on the spot just depending on the creditor. Now banks won't automatically remove the inquiry you may need to ask for them to submit a request and usually it will update in the next 30 days on your report. Hope this helps
