possible identity theft?

I recieved an insurance id card in the mail from Geico with my name and address for an auto that I do not own.  I have never gotten a quote from Geico on the autos that I do own.  I was on the phone with Geico for an hour and they turned it over to their investigation team.  I am worried that someone is trying to use my credit.  I have been monitoring my accounts to make sure there have been no unauthorized charges made.  About 3 months ago I had a bunch of unauthorized charges made to my banking account, which I had reversed - I have no idea if this is related to that incident or not.  What should be my next steps?  Is there a law enforcement agency I should talk to?  I want to believe that this was just a mix up but I am very leary

Re: possible identity theft?

You need to file a police report with your local police station as soon as possible.  Keep the insurance information you have recieved in the mail as evidence.

Once you have done that, notify the CRAs that you have been a victim of identity theft.

Exactly!  And the sooner the better!!!  Get a copy of the police report.

All it takes is for the ID thief to have an accident, they (you) get sued and a judgment is rendered against them (you).  It is NOT a pretty picture and as much as you'd be an innocent victim, it could take you many years to clear things up.

Once you have the identity theft (police) report, file it with the CRA, along with a request under the provisions of FCRA 605B, that all information in your credit file that is related to that information be blocked from inclusion in any credit report they issue.

Make sure that when filing the letter requesting blockage that you include proof of your identity, and state that the information is not related to any transaction by the consumer (you).
