possible old debt incorrectly reported

Hello. A few months ago, a collections agency began reporting an old Columbia House debt on my credit report, with a date in 2013. I am 100% positive I incurred no such debt in 2013. It has to be much older than that, I am thinking circa 2008.

They have not contacted me at all. I only know about this because of credit monitoring.

I am not sure what my first step should be? Debt validation? If it's as old as I'm thinking it is, it technically shouldn't be reported anymore as of sometime this year, except, they're reporting it as of 2013. We're hoping to buy a house in the near future, so I don't really want to go the wait-and-see route.

That 2013 date would just be the date they got the collection. The original account if you say could be from 08 then it may not have passed CRTP. The max time a CO or CA can report is 7.5 years from the DoFD of the account. I would send them a DV and I will tell you a mortgage app will bring them to the table since they know you will have to pay them to close.

They were required to have reported the DOFD to the CRA within 90 days after reporting of the collection.

Check either with annualcreditreport.com or order a CR directly from the CRA, and get the repoted DOFD.

If ir is incorrect, you czn dispute the accuracy of the reported DOFD.

Yeah, I figured that was probably when they bought the debt or something, tho I'm not sure why they'd wait til late 2014 to report it if they were going to bother.

Ok, so a new credit report might be in order? Is that what you mean? I got one from here in january, which was a few months after this collection showed up. Or should I pull it directly from the cra, rather than myfico?

Does statute of limitations apply for the state I'm in, or the state they're  in?

Re: possible old debt incorrectly reported

Update; after repulling my credit yesterday, I saw there was no new information regarding that account. It still showed only the date assigned, even when I looked directly from the Experian site. Nothing about when the account was originally defaulted. So I went ahead and submitted a dispute to Experian, requesting verification of the account and date of default - and just now, less than 24 hours later, received notification that they removed the collections from my report.
