question about reply from creditor

I called a creditor today to figure out why they were not reporting a zero balance (it was included in bankruptcy). They said that they had notification of my bankruptcy but would not send me a letter saying the balance was zero since it was included in bankruptcy and she said that would be a letter called "paid in full" and she couldn't do that since it was discharged by bankruptcy. I am NOT asking for a paid in full letter, just a statement that I do not owe the debt anymore and that it be updated to a balance of zero. I don't understand why they will not admit that I have a zero balance (and when I dispute via the CRA's they still say there is a balance). Isn't it illegal for them to report a balance when there is not one? It's especially frustrating since this original creditor never was paid late to begin with and was paid off in full prior to me moving.

Re: question about reply from creditor

Yes...if that debt was included in BK they must report a zero balance.

You might want to point this out to a supervisor on their end, and if that doesn't work, call your BK attorney.

Re: question about reply from creditor

If I wanted to handle this personally (instead of getting my bankruptcy att. involved) is there a letter I could write to them stating that I am no longer liable for the debt and they must report the balance as zero? Perhaps if they don't update it to read zero, they are in violation of the credit reporting laws?

Would this sound ok?

Your company is violating the law by not correctly reporting my discharged debts to the credit bureaus.

FTC OSC section 607, item 6 states: "A consumer report may include an account that was discharged in bankruptcy (as well as the bankruptcy itself), as long as it reports a zero balance due to reflect the fact that the consumer is no longer liable for the discharged debt."
