questionable parking ticket from AVIS

Anyone ever experience this?

2 months after traveling I get a strange $125 charge to my Amex Card. I investigate the charge and it turns out it's from some Parking ticket I never saw/received/had any knowledge of. Call AMEX, they immediately suspended the charge and a week later it fell off my statement for good (High Five, AMEX).

A week later I get a letter from Avis with the parking ticket authority name and number.
Threatening to effect my future car rental experience with any auto rental agency. I call the ticket authority but no one ever answers the phone.

Any advice on what to do? Does anyone know if car rental places report to credit agencies?

Call AmEX and tell them - you used the proper process to dispue and they were chargedback --- now thay are abusing you.

Car Rental companies may have a blacklist (not sure, but i sound like something they would do).  If Avis has a copy of the ticket let them produce it (they should have in order to prevent the chargeback as it would have been a legitimate charge)

Re: questionable parking ticket from AVIS

I know that they do a hard pull when you rent the car, but don't know if they can report the ticket or not, since it was written to the car, not the driver.

However, I used to work in the industry and all we had to do was send in a copy of the rental agreement that covered the time the ticket was issued and since all of the renters info was on it, the city would then go after that person. As long as we could prove the car was rented at the time, we were off the hook for the ticket.

Unfortunately, the dispute and chargeback with AMEX doesn't mean that AVIS can't legally try to collect.

AVIS can sue and also report a collection.  It's sad that they don't seem to have a department that deals with disputed tickets.  Seems like they just paid it without a second glance, and it may not have even been you since they won't give you a copy of the actual ticket to at least show that you had that car on the date and time of the occurance.

Unfortunately in their policy that you would have had to sign, it simply states that tickets are your responsibility.  Again, no dispute resolution department.

I would jump ahead to trying to find customer service by phone or letter right now and go right to PFB and start an online complaint.

Scarlet,

I work for Amex, we are out of it at this point. We cannot do anything since it has been charged back. Lodging a complaint with us unfortunately won't do anything either.

The RA with AVIS says that they have the right to collect for tickets that are issued while the car is on rent.  The agreement we have with AVIS says that they cannot charge the CM for tickets, that is why it was charged back.

We can take a complaint against them, but really can't do anything as per the contract (rental agreement) that was signed by the OP.

Re: questionable parking ticket from AVIS

Alrighty scoppe - but AmEX should know that becasue the ticket was charged back that they are threatneing a cardholder.

As for the ticket - the city/town should be able to produce a copy... and AVIS should be happy to produce a copy to get paid for it...they also need to produce your contract for the renatl including Time & Date  OUT and IN... who says that you didn't turn the car in at 10AM when the ticket was written at Noon (with someone else driving).

This is why I LOATHE car rental companies.  I absolutely refuse to give them unfettered access to any CC of mine - DH does it all the time.
