However to answer what you do have, sit down and figure out where you are at financially. Write out all your debts (CCs, loans, baddies, etc.) and look at where you are at. Next, make sure you have a written budget. If you are going deeper into debt, then you are spending more money that you are taking in. Next figure out what you are willing to give up. Maybe it is cable, maybe entertainment, fun on the weekend, going out to eat, or maybe you are buying stuff you don't even need. Make cuts.

If you have cut all you can cut, then maybe income is the issue. Figure out ways to increase your income via a 2nd job, or biz of your own, or tutoring (being a grad student), or TA, etc. Also look at what you do have and see if you can get rid of it. If you have junk laying around your place that you don't use or need, then have a garage sale or post on e-bay. Maybe you could cut back on lifestyle and take a step backwards and get a different car, place, etc if you have on-going payments. I'm not telling you to do this, but see if you can cut back on school until things shake out, etc.

Re: Graduate Student Desperate for Advice

Look also at talking to the person who counsels you for your PhD. Maybe if you pleaded your case you could persuade him or her to allow you to work PT somewhere. At one point I was pursuing a Masters in Econ and looked into getting a grant to conduct my own research thereby setting my own income assuming I were ever to be approved. Though I suppose if you work in a lab, you probably wouldn't be able to replicate that at home too easily.

The programming idea is great. If your contract at the University prohibits having a "job" or something that conflicts with your research, then starting a biz programming might work. If one hospital brushed you off, I bet there are 20 more within a decent drive that may say yes. You could always sell the concept and ask to remain as a consultant to keep up with the maintenance, data, etc.

Re: Graduate Student Desperate for Advice

I'm not sure if there is any equity in your car or not, but if there is you could sell the car and buy something old with the equity.  That would free up $300/month to either paydown other debt or be used for living expenses.  Additionally you wouldn't have to carry full coverage insurance on the car you paid cash for so that would further reduce your expenses.  The biggest problem with this scenario, is that you will likely need to put the car payment money aside for a month or two to ensure that you've got some money available in the event that the used car needs a repair.

Re: Graduate Student Desperate for Advice

My MIL was able to call her CCCs and ask for a hardship plan -- they reduced her monthly payment (minimum) from $100/month to $35/month for the next year (after that, it goes back to normal). Her balances hover around the $3K mark.

They told her that it won't affect her credit other than her utilization (which is already high in her case -- she has roughly 97%).

Might that be something you could try? I don't know if it's universal with all CCCs, but I figure it'd be worth a shot.
