Last condition

Got an approval with conditions beginning of last week.  All conditions have been taken care of except for one:

My wife has a car that has 6 payments left that her step-dad co-signed for.  The underwriter wanted it paid off.  Her stepdad paid it off.  Now the underwriter is saying that her stepdad has to give a gift letter saying that he's contributing money towards purchasing the house.

Why would he have to give a gift letter saying that if he legally owns the car with my wife and is not actually contributing any money towards the purchase of the house ... he will sign but is away for about a week and we need to close ASAP.

Re: Last condition

When my husband wrote me a gift letter 4 down payment funds, he actually had to go into the LO's office and sign a document that they had for this gifting purpose.  You might want to ask your LO if this is was your FIL will have to sign rather than just writing a letter.

Would he be available by computer w/ a scanner or a fax machine?

They are just covering their behinds that your wife isn't having some sort of secret loan to her dad that could interfere w/ the mortgage payment.  Dumb but whatever.

Congrats on almost closing!!!
