Refinance question

So my husband and I are about to refinance the mortgage on our house. He bought the house before we were married, so only his name is on the loan/deed. Are there any pro/cons to putting my name on the refi or should we keep it off, or does it not really matter?

Thanks!

Re: Refinance question

Yes it matters, both from a legal standpoint as well as a relationship one.

My opinion is that when the "I dos" are said, we become ONE unit, we own all things in common and we take on oneanothers ups (assets) and downs (bills). And, I have seen first hand in my family how one spouse's refusal to place his spouse's name on the house caused a snowball to pick up speed and eventually resulted in their divorce.

Other considerations...what happens to the house if he dies? And also, by putting your name on it, you are also assuming joint responsibility for the pmt of the mortgage. Are you ok with that? If not, why not?

There are pros and cons, but if you are married, my opinion is that you should be jointly responsible for the mortgage pmt., as well as all the other debts of oneanother. If he has significant equity in this house, then you have to decide how that is handled. Does he get paid back and you finance the entire loan again? 50/50?Or does this money go into the common pot? Myapproach would be the common pot method because my intention is to remain married until death. Divorce is not an option for me, so I don't feel the need to be concerned about what's hers and what's mine. Everything is OURS. This does not reflect the popular opinion, I am sure.

In some respects this is an easy no-brainer, and in others, it is complicated financial arrangement. Suze Orman would give you a VERY different answer than another financial expert, such as Dave Ramsey, would.
