Thanks for the helpful information.
I must say that some of their rankings as to what is "best" are highly questionable. But what the heck.

I would be most interested had they focused heavily on the credit products of these lending institutions.

Indeed. My main is 4th in my state and they're horrible. Yelp and Google reviews give 3-3.5 for almost all branches. If that's good enough for 4th....

Yeah, I get & don't get the rankings.
My state (NC) has NCSECU as their #1, and I've been a member for ~12y and don't use them for anything because their rates aren't great, and neither are most of their products. A number of friends who had used them for mortgages and other loans moved away from using them because they're not that good. They do not have good credit offerings, and even things like the autoloans can be easily beat.
I joined my current "main" CU specifically because, of all of the ones clustered in my particular area, coworkers and acquaintances found their service to be the best, and it's not even listed, though the ones they found lacking are...
I think my CU is solid, from their offerings to their fantastic service, so who knows.
@calyx That is exactly why I said I would be most interested had they focused heavily on the credit products of these lending institutions. So happens, most of the credit unions in my area are good, but that may not be the case elsewhere.
They list Community America as best in Kansas, and fourth best in Missouri.
Ten years ago, Community America was awesome...
...now it's bleh.
Nothing terrible about them, but nothing wonderful either. They are easily beat by other local credit unions.

@SOGGIE- Absolutely! What I find fascinating is that for our "number 1" there is no fee-free checking, the loan rates aren't great, and there are no good credit offers, and I've heard customer service isn't that great. The ONLY thing is really has going for it is that it's the largest CU in the state. It's just weird.
I joined when I moved here, since they're a difficult CU to get into UNLESS you work for the state - there's this aura of exclusivity - but I refuse to pay for checking (they charge $1/mo, but then donate the fee, which I can do myself, kthxbai) and I get better rates for loans with other CUs. The initial deposit I made into my share account has just been sitting there, haha. My friends actually moved their mortgages away because they were so unhappy with the service (the only product I haven't looked at).
The other ones I understand (even if I am not interested in their products), but NCSECU is a bit baffling.
Thanks for sharing! I looked up my state (IL) since I'm interested in joining CUs right now, and I was surprised by the lack of known/CUs on the list. I guess I continue to use myFICO to help me make that determination!

Colorado's CUs are all kind of meh but the five that they included on that list are the five I have entertained joining (and I'm a member of two of them - SSFCU and Ent).
